SILVER GILT VANITY BOX

This box by Garrard has important connections, being commissioned by Sir Winston Churchill's great-grandmother, Jane, Duchess of Marlborough, in 1844.
The box lid and covers of the interior boxes bear the Spencer-Churchill coat of arms. Expertly crafted in rosewood veneer and brass, it is lined with red velvet and holds four silver-gilt mounted glass decanters, a jar and various solid silver gilt boxes.
Contents include spoons, brushes, a letter opener, candlesticks and sewing and manicure implements which are thought to have had very little use as the Duchess died soon after commissioning the vanity box. It was at one time owned by a cousin of Sir Winston, who regularly received letters from him during his time as Prime Minister.

This rare singing bird box is from Germany circa 1930. Made by the Griesbaum company, the mix of enamelling and silver adds a quaint realism to the book while offering beautiful pattern on the outside and a fully working singing bird inside. Truly unique.
