HEAVENLY HYRCUS
The extraordinary traits of cashmere make it supremely warm yet incredibly light and soft to the touch. This makes it a favourite as an insulating layer for outdoor pursuits, but it is too beautiful to be always hidden away under outerwear. Fashion designers savour its fine qualities and Uber babies can be snuggled up in its embrace too.
The fibre comes exclusively from the fleece of the Hyrcus goat, found mainly in the mountainous regions of Northern China, Mongolia, Iran and Afghanistan. In order to survive bitterly cold winters and torrid summers, the goat has developed an underfleece with an elevated capability of maintaining insulation against both hot and cold. Beneath a coarse outer coat are the down’s tiny fibres, about 15 thousandths of a millimetre. The goat produces only about 150 grams of this down a year, making it very precious.

Goats that go far
Cashmere is the perfect fibre for a huge range of garments for men and women and when mixed with wool adds a luxurious feel and extra warmth to coats and suits.
While it may not be the obvious choice for babies' clothes because of the care needed in washing, its properties make it ideal for baby sleeping bags.
Pashmina shawls are a perennial favourite and the best cashmere shawls can be carried in a small bag yet shrug off creases effortlessly.
