The purpose of audio equipment and speakers might not have changed – to transmit sound as clearly and accurately as possible – but the technology involved, and the looks available, were unthinkable in 1980 when those words opened the Roxy Music track Same Old Scene.

Once, bigger generally meant better as far as speakers were concerned.
