Consumers are expected to have spent nearly £23billion in the sales by the third week of January.

The early start to the sales – before New Year – saw records broken on the first three days. Retail analysts said the £10billion spent during the first week of the sales was the best period of 2011 for retailers, beating the pre-Christmas rush.

Experts who are predicting the total spend of nearly £23 billion by the third week of January say this would be a rise of nearly £400million on the equivalent post-Christmas period last year.
