Uber talk

Carole Levitt

We've risked the wrath of traditionalists by including a whisky from Japan in our Uber selections of the amber nectar.

Nowadays, in addition to Scotch and the whiskey from Ireland or America, it is possible to find whiskies from The Netherlands, South Africa, Australia and Sweden. What do you think about these relatively new ventures? Can true whisky be made outside of Scotland?

This sets the standards for blended whisky. The pinnacle whisky of the House of Walker is incredibly smooth with layers of flavour from hand-selected, rare casks from across the distilling regions of Scotland. Its flavours are influenced by the smoke of the west and the sweet whiskies of the east.

Gift cheer - These silver tots from The Good Gift Company make a great present for a whisky lover - as long as used for Scotch of course!

Not forgetting the Irish - There are some marvellous Irish Whiskeys, which are typically extra smooth due to the triple distillation (in contrast to twice for Scotch) and use of unpeated malt. Justerini & Brooks has Bushmills 1608 at £407 for six.

First bottling - Inish Turk Beg Maiden Voyage is a new single malt from the solely Irish-owned Cooley distillery, available from The Whisky Exchange at £130.
